The Marine Aggregates Levy Sustainability Fund (MALSF) was a £25m programme of marine research undertaken from 2004-2011, funded through a Government imposed levy on all primary aggregate production (including marine aggregates) to reflect the environmental cost of winning these materials. A proportion of the revenue generated was used to provide a source of funding for research aimed at minimising the effects of aggregate production. This funding, delivered through Defra, was known as the Aggregate Levy Sustainability Fund (ALSF).  The fund had both marine and terrestrial components.  The main aim of the MALSF programme was to promote environmentally friendly aggregate extraction in the marine environment in England or in English waters.

The MALSF data holding on the Marine Data Exchnage includes final reports from reseach projects and outputs from Regional Environmental Characterisation Surveys (RECs).

Alongside survey operational reports and final REC reports the follwoing survey data is acquired during REC surveys:

Geophysical Surveys

  • Sub-bottom profiler (boomer) - generally supplied as raw digital data (i.e. cod or sgy files) and paper rolls (available from geodata@bgs.ac.uk)
  • Side-scan sonar - generally supplied as raw digital data (i.e. cod or sgy files), sonar seafloor mosaics (geotiffs) and paper rolls
  • Magnetometer
  • Bathymetry (ASCII xyz)
  • Gridded bathmetry (processed swathe bathymetry)

Environmental Surveys

  • Imagery (videos and stills)
  • Species lists
  • Particle Size Analysis
  • Vibrocores (logs and images for Humber and East Coast RECs only)

MALSF Statement on Data Use and Publication
