Fisheries and Seals in Kent

Project Focus:

image position on the right

This project aims to increase understanding of the seal-fisheries conflict in Kent, particularly focusing on seal depredation. The study explores the economic and operational impacts on Kent’s inshore fisheries and explores potential mitigation strategies.

Originally, the project intended to trial acoustic deterrent devices (ADDs) as a mitigation method. However, due to lack of data on the magnitude and nature of interactions, the first step was to characterize depredation. Characterisation of the depredation involved identifying which fish species are being affected, methods of determining the predators responsible, and assessing the extent of these interactions and their economic impact on fisheries.

Through field observations, interviews with fishers and photographic evidence of damaged catch, the project assesses the extent of seal depredation in Kent’s inshore fisheries. The economic consequences for fishers are outlined including revenue loss and increased operational costs. Potential mitigation strategies are evaluated including gear modifications and alternative deterrent methods.
