MDE Profiles: Grace King

Hi, my name is Grace. I am a new marine research intern and I will be working within the Marine Data Exchange team over the next 6 months!

Personal Profile:

From a young age I have always been surrounded by water, whether that’s swimming in the ocean/pool, scuba diving or snorkeling, it is a passion I will always have. Understanding more about our marine environment and how we interact with it fascinates me, particuarily as we strive as a nation to reach our Net Zero goal by 2050.

Favourite Hobbies:

Looking after my fish, Scuba diving, snorkelling, swimming and playing hockey.

Favourite marine creature:

It’s hard to pick just one but I’ve always thought that seals look like the dogs of the ocean, particularly Grey seal pups!

2 truths & a lie:

  • I’ve spoken to Prince Edward
  • I can do a front flip
  • I'm creating a pond business

Career Profile:

I am a recent graduate from the University of Plymouth where I studied Marine Biology. Whilst studying, I discovered my passion for offshore renewable energy which I was able to pursue further in my dissertation. Through my dissertation I was able to learn more about offshore wind which led me wanting a career in the marine industry. My next steps are to gain valuable experience over the course of my 6 month placement here at The Crown Estate.

What am I going to work on:

I will be working within the evidence team, where I will assist on evidence projects and help to improve data accessibility by creating engaging content pieces which will aim to attract a wide range of audiences, from industry to coastal communities, helping to increase the awareness of the offshore wind industry.

Why did you choose this career:

I always knew that I wanted to have a career that will make a difference to the world we live in today. I am passionate about finding a way to protect and enhance the marine environment whilst helping to shift from fossil fuels to renewable energy alternatives, so this internship seemed like the perfect opportunity for me to start this journey.

Skills:

  • Data analysis (Rstudio and Linux)
  • Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator
  • Scientific communication
  • Scientific writing
  • Teamwork

Career Pathway:

  • BSc Marine Biology, University of Plymouth – First Class Honors
  • (How the increase in the number of offshore wind farms can influence the connectivity of marine systems.)
