Strategic Net Gain Targets
Project Overview

Strategic Net Gain Targets for Coastal and Marine Environments
Status: Complete
Start Date: June 2021
Lead Organisation: Seabed User and Developer Group
The Offshore Wind Evidence and Change Strategic Net Gain Task and Finish Group, established under Defra’s Offshore Wind Enabling Actions Programme, has worked towards the development of Marine Net Gain (MNG) targets. Net gain is an approach to development that aims to leave the natural environment in a measurably better state than before. This means protecting, restoring, or creating environmental features that are of greater ecological value to wildlife, habitats and people than any losses associated with the original project.
The group conducted surveys and analyses to inform the development of strategic MNG targets. These targets, which have gained consensus across all sectors, set a clear direction for developments to contribute towards MNG and the restoration of the marine environment.
