Wind Turbine Blade Repurposing: Opportunities, Social Benefits, and Challenges
Project Focus

End-of-life (EOL) wind turbine blades present a growing waste challenge, with limited sustainable disposal solutions. Landfilling and energy-intensive recycling methods dominate current practices, creating an urgent need for more sustainable strategies, such as repurposing. Additionally, the societal value of repurposing remains underexplored, leaving a gap in understanding its potential benefits for communities. This project investigates existing and potential blade repurposing solutions, with a specific focus on their social impact.
This research highlights how repurposing wind turbine blades can generate direct social benefits, such as community engagement, job creation, and sustainable infrastructure. By bridging knowledge gaps and providing actionable insights, this project supports the transition to a circular economy, offering practical solutions for policymakers, industry stakeholders, and local communities. A brief review of the challenges that the emerging repurposing industry faces regarding widespread adoption.
