Description

Sediment plumes, defined as visible concentrations of sediment at the surface of the water column, can be seen in satellite and aerial images down-current of offshore wind farms across Europe. But until now, little was known about their cause, composition and extent. The main aims of this study was to better understand the formation of these sediment plumes and the interaction of offshore wind farms' monopile base structures with the surrounding water.
